Diane Janowski

My work comes from associative ideas.

A few weeks ago I woke up with the idea what is essential?…what is quintessential?…what is quiescently frozen? And the answer was Canada. Name five things that come from Canada. The Dionne quintuplets. Perfect.

My drawings are part of continuing "Canned Ham" series using images off the internet. I do a google image search for words and see what comes up. “Canned Ham" for me, symbolizes the taking of a natural entity and cramming into a unnatural metal can – leaving it there for a year, or years, then opening it with a can opener to see what, if anything, has changed inside. Sort of a science experiment between normal and not. The Dionne quintuplets were such an experiment. The Canadian government “took over” the Dionne family in 1934 and used them to make millions of dollars for many years.
